The Lord assured Abraham that through his offspring, all the nations of the world would be blessed. Some time after the birth of Isaac, (Abraham and Sarah’s miracle child), Abraham was commanded by God to offer his son as a sacrifice in the land of Moriah. Forced to make the most difficult decision of his life, Abraham put his faith into action and began preparations for taking the life of his only son. But just as Abraham was about to sacrifice Isaac, the angel of the Lord called out to him and said, "Abraham! Abraham! Do not lay a head on the boy. Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me, your only son." – Genesis 22:11-12, NIV) Abraham passed this test of faith and thus renewed his trust in the Lord.  Main Characters: Abraham, Sarah, Hagar, Isaac, Ishmael Scriptural References: Genesis 15:1-21, Genesis 16:1-12, Genesis 17:1-22, Genesis 22:1-12, & Deuteronomy 12:21 Overall Theme: Abraham keeps faith in God, and exhibits extraordinary courage in following God’s will. That faith and courage remain strong, even when Abraham is tested to the limit. When God sees the power of  Abraham’s faith, He rewards Abraham with unlimited blessings. Summary: The Lord has promised Abram and Sarai that they would have children as countless as the stars. Yet they are growing old, so Sarai tells Abram to take her      servant Hagar as a wife. Perhaps she will bear a son. Ishmael is born to Hagar. But Ishmael is not the son promised by God. The Lord appears to Abram and renews his promise. As a symbol of this covenant, God renames Abram and Sarai. Henceforth, they are known as Abraham and Sarah. Miraculously, Sarah gives birth to Isaac. God tells Abraham that he should care for Ishmael as his own, but that His promise and inheritance will  go to Isaac. As a dutiful son, Isaac helps his father with ritual     sacrifices. Abraham asks  Isaac if he knows why they sacrifice their finest lamb. Isaac replies that because God has given them everything, they must give Him their best.  The answer pleases his father and he makes Isaac promise that he will always do what the Lord asks.  Isaac confirms that he will. The Lord then appears to Abraham, and tells him that he must sacrifice Isaac. Shaken, but obedient to God, Abraham prepares to kill Isaac. Isaac lies down on the altar of ritual sacrifice, willing to give up his life to God. Suddenly, the Lord speaks to Abraham, telling him not to sacrifice Isaac.  He says that because Abraham and Isaac were both obedient and willing to do whatever the Lord asked of them,  they are now even more blessed than before. Background: God promises many rich rewards, but demands in turn our obedience and faith. Obedience to God requires courage, and our faith is tested daily.
