My wife and I were looking for good movies for the kids and were excited to be introduced to these. Despite the high cost, we felt it would be a great movies where the kids could learn more about the bible. We received the Prodigal Son as an introductory movie, for free. We set down to watch it with the kids and all was well until the guys came out with the knives and the belly dancer scene. With an 11 year old son, becoming more interested in girls, we were disappointed. If we have to fast forward a any part of a movie, it's not a movie worth owning. Especially paying $25 plus for it. Typical of everything out there. Certainly, there would be a way to tell this great story without these scenes. Somehow, get the idea across, in a very short, quick way. Perhaps some the other movies won't have to be fast forwarded.

After having viewed The Prodigal Son DVD from the Animated Stories from the New Testament series, I was amazed at the sensitivity to Biblical authenticity that was conveyed. Not only are the stories motivation and dynamic, but they are presented in a manner that transcends the bounds of age. I would highly recommend this series for everyone and especially for youth of all ages. Each DVD provides a great tool for teaching, instruction, discussion, and general presentation of Biblical themes and stories. God's word is conveyed through each DVD in the series in a powerful and lasting way. The beauty of these Christian DVDs is that the material conveyed is fresh and new even after watching them numerous times.

"But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found." – Luke 15:32 (NIV)

The Parable of The Prodigal Son (or the Parable of the Lost Son) is the tale of a wayward youth reunited with his father and family after having squandered all his inheritance through wasteful living. Learn of God’s overwhelming love for those who humbly repent of their foolish ways with this endearing Bible story!

Main Characters:
Jacob, the prodigal Son; Jacob’s father; Jacob’s older brother; Anna and Fashid

Scriptural References:
Luke 15:1-32 and 1John 1:9

Overall Theme:
The Prodigal Son, Jacob, leaves his father’s farm to seek his fortune in the city.  Encountering many temptations, Jacob squanders his inheritance.  Reduced to living with animals, he decides to return to his father’s home regardless of the consequences.   His father welcomes Jacob home, celebrating his return and forgiving him of his sins.

With a group of followers gathered about him, Jesus tells the parable of the Prodigal Son, Jacob, the younger son of a successful farmer, begs his father for his inheritance so he can go to the city and become a rich money lender.  Jacob’s brother insists that Jacob stay and do his part of the hard work on the farm.  But Jacob’s father relents and bids a sad good-bye to his younger son.

In the city, Jacob sees temptations on every corner, and he wastes his money at every opportunity.  When Jacob is chased through the streets by a group of beggars, he is rescued by the lovely Anna and her brother Fashid.  Anna wants to help Jacob invest his money wisely, but Fashid merely wants to take advantage of Jacob.

Within a short time, Fashid and Jacob have spent all of Jacob’s money.  Jacob declares to Anna that he will return to her when he is rich, but Anna can see that he is foolish and wasteful.  And now that Jacob is poor, Fashid turns his back on him.

Jacob is reduced to begging in the streets.  He leaves the city, wandering the countryside, where he encounters a farmer who allows him to take care of his animals.  Reaching a new low, Jacob eats with the hogs in order to survive.  In total despair, he decides to return home and beg his father to hire him as a servant.

In front of his father’s house, Jacob falls to the ground,   begging forgiveness.  His father, delighted to see him, throws a celebration in his honor.  Jacob’s brother, who has done all the work since Jacob left, is angry and feels that he has been slighted.  But his father explains that he would have done the same for him.

Jacob had to go through much to gain wisdom, but found his way back home. The older son and his father go together to celebrate Jacob’s return.

Jesus tells us that even though each of us has sinned, if we return to the Lord, He gladly will forgive us.  Our Heavenly Father’s love knows no bounds, accepting us in our obedience and despite our failure.  Like Jacob’s father, the Lord stands ready to embrace each of us when we return home.
