Pocohontas Interactive DVD Lesson Plans
Overall Theme
Pocahontas is curious about the English settlers of Jamestown. She befriends the town and persuades her father to help them survive through the winter. Because of Pocahontas, Jamestown’s Leader, Captain John Smith, is saved from being clubbed to death. Through her efforts, peace is eventually restored between the Indians and the people of Jamestown, and she is introduced to Europe through her husband.
Word Study
Objectives:
The learner will select rhyming words.
The learner will explore new vocabulary words.
- Phonemic Awareness: The teacher will read from the Teachers’ Resource and Activity Book, page 22. Students will identify the rhyming words.
Vocabulary: The teacher will choose vocabulary words (Attachment A) and then have students complete one or more activities (Attachment B).
Subject Area Integration: Art
Objective:
The leaner will create a model.
- The teacher will lead the students in making a wigwam using the Teacher’s Resource and Activity Book, page 11.
Differentiated Activities
Objectives:
The learner will sequence main events in the story using picture clues.
The learner will identify book titles.
The learner will describe a scene.
The learner will generalize.
The learner will identify shapes.
Whole Group
- Sequencing: The teacher will scramble the pictures from the Teacher’s Resource and Activity Book, page 35, and then the students will put in order what happened first, next, then and last.
- Identifying: The teacher will show the students the picture from Teacher’s Resource and Activity Book, page 14. The students will name books Pocahontas would like to read and tell why.
- Describing: Students will examine the picture from Teacher’s Resource and Activity Book, page 7. Students will describe what the scene would look like in the winter. Students may draw a new picture or draw on this scene to indicate winter.
Individual
- Generalizing: The students will use Teacher’s Resource and Activity Book, page 7, and draw pets that could have lived in Jamestown. Pictures of pets from magazines could also be cut out and glued to the page.
- Identifying: The teacher will make a transparency of Teacher’s Resource and Activity Book, page 6. Students will identify like shapes following given directions.
Writing
Objective:
The learners will dictate an informative report.
· The teacher will lead a discussion on how sharing was shown between the Indians and settlers. Each student may lend a thought to be included in the report.
