Pocahontas Interactive DVD Lesson Plans
Overall Theme
Pocahontas is curious about the English settlers of Jamestown. She befriends the town and persuades her father to help them survive through the winter. Because of Pocahontas, Jamestown’s Leader, Captain John Smith, is saved from being clubbed to death. Through her efforts, peace is eventually restored between the Indians and the people of Jamestown, and she is introduced to Europe through her husband.
Word Study
Objectives:
The learner will explore new vocabulary words.
- Vocabulary: The teacher will choose vocabulary words (Attachment A) and then have students complete one or more activities (Attachment B).
Subject Area Integration: Social Studies
Objective:
The learner will research and trace their family tree.
- Students will research his/her family name and ancestry using the Internet and personal interviews of family members.

The learner will evaluate story characters.
Whole Group
- Inferring: Teacher will use Teachers’ Resource and Activity Book, page 39, to guide students in a discussion concerning personal attributes of story characters.
Individual
- Composing: Students will write a paragraph to describe the life of an Indian princess.
- Research: Students will research the colony of Jamestown to determine what is located there now and present the findings in a report.
- Creating: Students will research information about Jamestown and create a map showing the layout of the town.
- Evaluating: Students will examine the picture in Teacher’s Resource and Activity Book, page 17, and discuss the expression of Powhatan. Answer the question, “Do you think this expression ever changed?” Explain why or why not.
Writing
Objective
The learner will write an informative report.
· Pocahontas left her comfort zone and begged for the life of John Smith. Lead students in a discussion of courageous acts that they have heard about or personally experienced. Write about one of these experiences.
