The name Emily Dickinson brings to mind a whole cluster of mysterious,
rather bizarre and inaccurate images: the broken-hearted victim of a
tragic love affair, the meek daughter, an eccentric old maid composing
verse by moonlight.
Dickinson was a grand American poet whose
entire life was reflected, shaped and probed in her work. Often these
exaggerated images take on such magnitude that we forget our main
concern with Dickinson which is, of course, her poetry.
